I have always liked movies, like most people, but never had a rating system for them until I came to Lebanon Valley College. My first semester I had a class called First Year Seminar, which took the place of a traditional Freshman English Comp course. The theme for this FYS course was "Heroes, Villains and Outlaws" and it dealt with watching films and evaluating the role and perception of the heroes and villains found within those film.
The course was taught by Dr. Stephen C. MacDonald, who was, at that time, the Vice President and Dean of Faculty for the college. During my four years at LVC, he was elected President of the College, and still is today.
President MacDonald took our class of 16 students and together we came up with a 5 star rating scale. I'm pretty sure we, as a class, came up with the quarter point increments for being particular about our film ratings, but we may have only used a half-point increment system. I don't quite remember. I do believe though, that he told us not to give a film a 0 or a 5 for the same reasons I don't award those ratings now.
We only watched 11 films during the course of that semester, but I ended up keeping the rating system and here I am, watching movies and rating them, which has built up to quite a large amount on file.
I had tried once before to create website for my movie ratings, but I didn't have the drive to keep it going. Now though, I do have the drive and I want to share my love for movies with anyone willing to read through all of this. I chose Blogger for the host of my site because I can let anyone and everyone leave comments and opinions about my ratings. Please remember, I was not a film student, and I am not a movie expert in the critical sense, but I have a great appreciation for what films bring to the table and I usually try and be as objective as I can, but my personal tastes will always factor in.
Thanks for coming to my site, and I hope that you enjoy what's here.
